Because 'even' underprivileged children like to have nice, fun things.
If it helps, perhaps their PS2 is second-hand.

Hello,
Because they can.
Many of these kids are not underprivileged. These days if a child does not have a PS2 game system and several games to go with it, this is underprivileged. Or if a kid does not have a cell phone.
My oldest son delivered these Christmas presents one year to these poor families (some of these families we no personally and no they are not underprivileged. Small town). He came home asking me why we do not have all these things those kids are getting. Of course he told me of all there presents under there tree's and there fancy cars etc. I explained to him we maybe poor but in no way are we going to ask for handouts.
I really think that parents use/abuse the system. Did you see on the news where these places for the poor are getting the recalled toys donated to them for this Christmas like crazy. This is shameful!
Or some of the people who run these things take the cool toys home for there own kids (the Mr. works with several guys who have done this).
If there is a system to abuse, it will be abused. Find a child you know and help that way, best way to do it. We like to think people are not going to lie and such at this time of the year, but they do. It does hurt the real underprivileged kids. Go to the hospital and see those poor kids stuck in there beds over Christmas, gives one another look on life.

get this. my family has always had a lot. then one year my dad walked out. that year for Christmas we were donated too and my brothers asked for things like that since we were use to having so much and he still had game systems from when my dad was around. so look at it that way. they might be going through a hard time right now but that doesn't mean that they always have. and all because their family is going through a hard time that doesn't mean they cant have the things they really want. and really, what kid would ask for socks and underwear for Christmas? those kids that are asking for games are probably too young to understand what is going on.

My question (and it's an honest question, as I am a bit confused by xtianity in general) is why are people asking for charity to give their kid's presents for a religious holiday in the first place? People go into DEBT buying crap they can't afford...for Je*us? I don't see the connection...But go figure- people who are so broke they can't buy the presents themselves obviously don't have the sense, or else the motivation, to ask for neccessities, when someone else's money can buy their kids' PS2!
As far 'they're just kids', if they are that broke their parents need to sit them down and say "we are relying on the kindness of strangers, you need not expect extravagant gifts as long as I cannot afford to give them." If a kind stranger happens to buy the PS2 or I-pod, they can then at least feel as grateful and fortunate as they are, instead of feeling entitled!

because they are children and they want what their parents cannot afford.
socks and underwear might be exactly the only thing a parent can afford for them but how is that a gift and not a practical item. Think of how you felt when you got clothes and not toys as a child.

You have come up with a real problem, the greedy people who go to charities when they don`t need to. Also, have you seen the size of the box of gifts? I was lucky to get one present, when I was a kid.
