The reason being there are no railways serving Portree.

Your route is:
1. Highland Country Bus from Portree to Kyle of Lochalsh
2. First Scotrail train from Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness
3. First Scotrail train from Inverness to Edinburgh Waverley(you might need to change trains at Perth.)
4. National Express train from Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross

Your problems are:
1. The line between Kyle of Lochalsh and Dingwall (just north of Inverness) is single track with passing places. As a consequence, any late running of trains coming in the opposite direction affects the timekeeping of your train.
2. The line between Inverness and Perth is mainly single track - same problems as in last paragraph!
3. The demand for public transport north of Perth is very limited and this is reflected in the number of trains that run each day. In theory, most trains from Kyle of Lochalsh connect with a train to Perth (and vice versa) (see last two paragraphs!)
4. It will take you nine hours to get from Portree to Edinburgh
Waverley and a good four hours from there to London. I have doubts if you can do the whole trip in one day.

But, there is an overnight sleeper service between Scotland and London, which has connections to Inverness.

You would have to take a train to Edinburgh, or Possibly a through train to Inverness, from Kings Cross. Then take a ScotRail train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. From there, take a Rapsons or Scottish CityLink coach on to Portree.

Do you mean Portree on the Isle of Skye? If so, you have to take the train to Fort William and then take a bus from there. (or at least thats the way it was ten years ago when I last went there)

You can get the Government website http://transportdirect.info to work the whole journey out for you from door to door. It may even have an idea of fares if the transport provider has its act together.
