I have never used these "terms of endearment" in a personal relationship, like with my ex-wife or a girlfriend but now that I'm in my late fifties I sometimes use them generically, Sweetie, Baby and the like, in a playful way.
Someone (an aquaintenance) once told me that it sounded condecending but no one else has ever complained.
