Well, exercise helps, and it is good to get out in the sunshine on a daily basis, especially if you have a seasonal depression. As an alternative med, St. Johnswort is a helpful herbal alternative. Avoid alcohol, and eat a healthy diet. But there is nothing wrong with trying prescription antidepressants, sometimes they can save your life - sometimes you might need to try a different med, or a lower dose, to avoid the side effects. Good luck! Also, it sounds corny, but it really helps to smile.

St john's Wort, like many other have said, there have actually been quite a few studies done on it's effectiveness, and it has shown quite affective in mild to moderate depression, I've been using it for a few months, and It's been very effective. the only thing is that I did get my period a week early the first month I was on it and some research has shown that it can affect your hormone cycles, birth control pills and such, but has never resulted in a pregnancy within a study. also, because it is very immediately plant derived it can be difficult to get a standardized dose.
I also have found a steady schedule, good food (I mean whole grains, high quality meat and veggies) exercise, and a satisfied libido do wonders for depression as well. but I know sometimes you need meds to get over the hump, and to have enough energy ad motivation to do tho use things.
good luck, depressions a bich

There is currently only one over-the-counter substance available in the United States that is both clinically proven to work and is reasonably safe - SAM-e.

SAM-e is an abbreviation for "S-adenosyl-L-methionine". It is an amino acid with a few extra bits added in. It functions in the body as a methyl donor, improving the function of the body's antioxidant systems as well as having a demonstrated and significant effect on both arthritis and depression.

SAM-e is available at any nutritional supplement store and most stores that carry a wide selection of vitamins. It comes in 200mg tablets - the recommended dosage is two tablets per day.

SAM-e works a little bit faster than traditional pharmaceutical antidepressants - you may feel an effect in as little as a week, but if you don't, give it at least three weeks to kick in. It's been proven in Italian studies to be as powerful as imipramine and fluoxetine, two common drugs used as reference points in antidepressant studies.

This compound works in the brain by increasing serotonin transmission (just as many antidepressants do) but by a completely different mechanism that isn't really understood. If you see a doctor, be sure to let him or her know if you are taking it because it could have bad interactions with some pharmacological antidepressants.

Stay away from St. John's Wort. It has some bad side effects like making you sensitive to sunlight and it has unpredictable interactions with many medications because of its effects on certain enzymes that break down medications. It's also just not very potent.

If you decide to try SAM-e, try to couple it with good habits to support mental health - exercise regularly, eat healthfully, keep a regular sleep schedule, and try to avoid alcohol or too much caffeine. These practices can really help too, especially in combination with a supplement or medication treatment.

Best of luck to you!

All I wanna know - is that really you in that little picture??
If so, you have nothing to be depressed about! lol
Instead of meds, exercise is one of the best things to burn stress and relieve depression. Do something you enjoy, or join a class and try something new: cardio kickboxing, martial arts, swimming, yoga, pilates, indoor tennis, whatever.

Sorry but I have yet to discover any Herbal alternatives that combat depression. I've tried them all, from St. John's Wort to Valarian root. The only thing that works for me are those nasty prescription drugs.

First of all a simple lifestyle changes might save the day:
1) Don't spend too much time in the dark room - if you have "no-light-in" curtains in your bedroom, remove them - waking up because of the natural light is the best for your mood
2) Walk in the park (or city streets) for at least 30 minuets every day (1 hour is ideal)
3) Stop watching TV (spend at least 1 month TV free), if you can not see yourself without it, at least stop machining it before 9 pm – watch only light programs: no news, no action movies, no horror movies. You know that what you just watched is not real, you subconscious don’t.
4) Allow yourself at least 7 hours of sleep (8-9 is better)
5) Spend more time with your family, friends, significant other, your dog/cat.
6) Spend 15 minutes per day bathing in the sunlight (do not use sun block)
7) Make love on a regular basis – if it is possible
8) Check for Electro Magnetic Radiation inside of your house and in your bedroom (important) - high EMR might induce depression and anxiety in some people - in England and some other European countries EMR is regulated as a dangerous pollutant. Install EMF filters if needed.

Food and supplements:
1) Take B6 vitamin
2) Drink Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) tea (at least 3 cups per day). In Europe Melissa was used to treat depression from the ancient times (not St. John’s Wort – this one was used to treat indigestion, good mood is a side effect – St. John’s Wort improves liver function)
3) Don’t eat processed food.
4) Don’t eat any food that have a lot of sugar or/and corn syrup
5) Cut on fat (especially fried one)
6) No coffee or caffeinated drinks for you, sorry.
7) No soft drinks.

Aromatherapy – all proposed treatments must be used for at least 3 weeks:
Use one or a combination of these essential oils (choose the ones you liked most):
1) Bergamot (citrus bergamia)
2) Frankincense (boswellia carteri) – excellent remedy against anxiety
3) Ylang ylang (cananga odorata) – it also helps with “love” mood
4) Neroli/petitgrain/orange bigarade (citrus aurantium)
5) Lemon (Citrus limon)
6) Cypres (Cupressus sempervirens)
7) Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – perfect against depression and anxiety
8) Melissa (Melissa officinalis) – my first choice along with bergamot and frankincense
9) Rose (Rosa damascene)
10) Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) – For woman – IMPORTANT – do not use as skin application days 15 – 30 of your menstrual cycle, it can induce heavy bleeding

How to use:
1) Put 10 drops of each oil you want into the cup with hot water or diffuser; keep it close – enjoy the aroma
2) Put 1-2 drops (of each oil you want) in 1 tbsp of Almond oil. Apply a little behind the ears . Be carful: do not use bergamot or lemon during the summer – they are photosensitive and you can end up with sunburns.

Therapies that might help:
1) Reiki – promotes peace and tranquility
2) Life coach sessions – helps you to deal with causes of depression

Hope this helps.

St John's Wort. Works wonders for me. Your results may vary.

Otherwise, you might try focusing on the positive in your life. The cognitive part of depression should not be overlooked.
