You should get her the following:

Several nights good sleep! That means YOU get up with the baby and let her sleep through the night. A few nights a week or every other night, perhaps. If she's nursing, have her pump a bottle or two. Or find a good formula for one feeding per day. Just remember that having sleep broken into 2 hour intervals can be EXHAUSTING! Five hours of straight sleep is better than having 8 hours total in 2 hour increments.

A clean house to come home to! Ask your mom, her mom, a good friend or ?? to help you get the house all cleaned up before she comes home. And maybe have a good meal (or 3!) prepared that can be easily reheated.

A few days home ALONE with baby & you. Depending on how SHE feels. Sometimes it's overwhelming and exhausting to have too many visitors right after baby is born. It's a great time to spend some 'down time' alone bonding with your new family.

Congrats and enjoy this special time!

I would say (as a woman who's husband is ALWAYS on a budget), that you should get her some tender love and kindness. Along with lots of understanding. She should be your princess, and after the baby comes there will be hard days, just be there for her! help out all that you can! it's a HUGE life change, and she just needs you. If you want to go out and buy her something, you know her best! Does she like to get her hair/nails done? a pedicure would be nice, massage, some new fluffy comfy slippers for those midnights up with the baby, a rocker for the baby & mommy, etc. You decide what she needs and likes, these are just suggestions of things I would like :)

Give her yourself. Do everything you can for her. Pick up on the cleaning, cooking etc. Try to do everything for her. Its best you get use to it now because when the baby comes shes gonna need rest (she will need to sleep when the baby sleeps and when shes not sleeping shes caring for the baby). Her body is going thro a huge change physically and emotionaly.

I have two little ones of my own. The best gift I got was my husband taking everything off my hands. No stress about the cleaning or cooking so i could just relax. It was GREAT

A pair of scissors or a couple of bricks.
No i'm only joking that's what mother said to me when she found out i was pregnant.
My husband always thought it was a maternity ring not a eternity ring so maybe something like that. I know you said you were on a budget but you can get something simple with a engraving.

if it were me (i'm due next week w/ first baby boy) i would want my first week at home to be just about me and baby. pamper me with the first week's meals and house "stuff" taken care of. maybe even two to three weeks. 40 wks is a long time of pain.

She doesn't really need anything other than a lot of support and help around the house.
