Make sure you state that it is copyrighted material, and then they cannot legally make money off of it without your permission to reprint with reference to you.
Pobept...you are right. I should not assume that since it has been sent to a publisher that they have copyrighted it.
BY ALL MEANS, if you have not copyrighted it, do so!
mentish is almost correct. If you declare that they are copyrighted (and they are) then they do NOT have free access to them. If you put copyrighted material, but do not disclose that they are copyrighted, you lose any benefits of copyright protection.

Ideas are not protected by copyright. Only your expression of those ideas are protected, if at all. Many things are not subject to copyright protection, including certain facts within your essay. Without seeing your essay, it's impossible to say in the abstract what can be protected by copyright and what cannot be protected.

Yes, they can. You have no protection. When you post things to spots like Myspace, you are putting them into "the public domain", which means anyone can use them. In some cases, you even are granting any copyrights-which may have existed-to the owners of the site you post to. Such agreements are in the fine print of the 'terms of service', or 'privacy policy', statements you accept when you sign onto such sites. Do not post anything you want to keep ownership of...such as the next Harry Potter like novel you write.

A written document can be copyrighted, Ideas can not.
Educate yourself on copyright laws. Simply stating that it has a copyright is not enough your must file for and obtain a copyright.
