I just found out I'm pregnant......took 2 home tests and one test at my doctors office......its been so long since my last baby I thought they were false positives.....even more so since I have been cramping and now bleeding. I spent all day in the ER yesterday and they confirm I am about 4 to 6 weeks pregnant, but I might end up miscarrying..........I am just heartbroken!

it IS impossible to have a GENUINE positive. The ONLY hting to turn one positive is hCG. That however can be artificially put into the body, as in some fertility treatments. If the womaqn does not wait long enough the hormone will not have left her body entirely when she tests.
If a test is read after 10 minutes, it will begin to dry and develop what is called an evaporation line which APPEARS to be a faint positive.
What MAY also happen, si a woman does everythgin right but has what is called a chemical pregnancy or an extremely early miscarriage. Therefore, GETTIGN her genuine positive but having it appear that it was wrong once she starts bleeding.

No false positives, unless they receive HCG injections. In those cases women are told not to take a pregnancy test for a certain amount of time after the injections.
The other thing that can happen, is that a woman take a test and get a positive, but she is very early and miscarries so that by the time she goes to the doctor the test they give is negative.

1) Recent full term birth -you can get a positive result up to 6 weeks post-partum
2) Recent miscarriage -though generally only within a few days if it is an early miscarriage
3) Certain fertility drugs that contain hCG
4) Certain cancers -some post-menopausal use pregnancy and ovulation prediction kits to screen for certain reproductive cancers
5) Tilting the test, under certain lights, while squinting and really, really "wanting" to see a positive.
Oh and apparently... sometimes... if you put breastmilk on the test instead of urine:

You are correct, false positives are very rare but false negatives are very common. If you had a miscarriage, you would typically notice an early period or a bit of abnormal bleeding. If a woman continues to get a false positive reading she needs to see her ob/gyn to have some blood work done.

They almost never happen because pregnancy tests pick up HCG hormones..or pregnancy hormones..I suppose if you had a miscarriage some of those hormones might still be there..but I'm not certain.

They could have been pregnant briefly and had an early-stage miscarriage and wouldn't have known it because it looks just like a period (perhaps slightly heavier). You are right in that this doesn't happen often though.

Most false positives, ladies take the test before they have missed their period, and then when their period comes they get it and think they misscarried. In fact they did, but their body was never really pregnant. Chemical Pregnancy.

Home tests are usually 99% accurate when all instructions are followed correctly and the results are read on time.
