Why are serial killers so intriguing?

Naturally, we assume if we can figure out why they are the way that they care, we hope we can "cure" the ones that have been caught and prevent new ones from being created.

Myself, I am curious about what makes them tick, why do they end up the way they are and how to keeping more people from turning out that way, that is one of the reasons there is so many studies done on them!!
