Here's the simple answer:

They are quite different but they have one thing in common. Both ideologies dictate that a government doesn't involve itself in the business of other governments.

Interventionists are open to every other type of interaction between governments including but not limited to cultural exchanges and trade.

Isolationists tend to be shut-ins.

The former is a compromise to the prudent latter position.Above guy's definition is apt.
