Edmonds has been on a serious downslide in the past few years, so it makes sense to get any value you can for him at this point. He's a career .379 OBP guy who has put up .350 and .325 the past couple of years, and I see no reason why he'd turn things around at age 38. Those numbers are equivalent to what you could get from most rookies or a replacement-level player, and they're certainly not worth the $10m per year you'd pay for them.
This is a smart move by the Cards. It shouldn't hurt them on the field given Edmonds' decline, and it frees up money to spend elsewhere.

I'm not a Cardinals fan, but I can tell you this much - trading Edmonds for anything was a good idea. Edmonds is getting old, and he has missed significant playing time in each of the past 2 seasons. He can still field well, but look at his offensive stats - he is clearly in the decline of his career. Getting rid of him frees up some room for STL to get some new outfielders who can put up the same mediocre numbers Edmonds has for a lot less money.
The Cardinals aren't a team that needs help "right now." They don't have as big a budget as the Yankees or Red Sox where they can just buy a lot of FAs and survive year-to-year. Plus, they shouldn't need to go out of their way to win a weak NL Central. The Cardinals have a decent farm system (see guys like Hawskworth, Rasmus), and I think that the best course for them is to call them up.

Every team has to keep looking at the future. Edmonds is a good player and has meant a lot to the Cardinals franchise, even I don't like the idea of seeing him play elsewhere and I have grown up a Seattle fan (we can get into those issues later).
But with that said, trading away an older player for younger ones is a way to keep your farm system healthy and also free up other financial resources for the Cards to work on getting the starting pitching they need.

Edmonds is 37 yrs old! What did everyone think we'll get for edmonds? Santana? Edmonds barely hit .250 past 2 seasons and how long do you think edmonds will play for? I mean I'm sad that we lost edmonds, but I'm even more glad that the Cardinals are starting to rebuild. We got a 3rd basemen that hits pretty well and has great amount of potential. Sure, he might only be double AA but down the road, we'll see what he's really worth. I think it was a pretty good deal, but we'll see how good it is in the near future. Oh, and Rasmus could come up!!

As much as I'm gonna miss one of the best center fielders to ever grace a cardinals uniform, i think we all knew it was coming sooner or later, as for what we got, a hometown boy hoping to be an eventual Rolen replacement, its hard to say now, i guess we'll find out sooner or later.
Jim you will be missed

Long term- they won't miss him much. At his age, he'll decline. If not this year....then very soon afterward.
