My school just got through putting on the musical, Carousel. We're doing High School Musical (I know =/) now. Auditions are Mon. and they want you to sing a pop-style song. Which song do you think would be better to show off my voice and catch their attention:

Kelly Clarkson - "What's Up Lonely?"
Christina Aguilera - "Genie in A Bottle"
India Arie (not pop, I know) - "I Choose"

ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

Well, I'd definately sing a pop song, so "I choose" is out of the question. If you sang "Genie in a bottle", they might laugh at you cause I don't think they would take you seriously. So, I'd sing something from High School Musical. It's a really good show, and you might actually be surprised. Last year we did HSM and I really didn't want to do it, but the script is very different from the movie. I really enjoyed it, but that's just my opinion. If I were you, I'd sing something from HSM. Usually your director (or whoever judges the auditions) chooses the person who already knows the song, and is good at it. Good luck!!!

I like the first two you picked a lot. If you like Kelly Clarkson, Breakaway would probably be a good choice too. :) But just because they want something "pop-style" doesn't mean you can't sing something from a musical. What about a song from Hairspray? You Can't Stop the Beat could work for this... so could one of the (more school appropriate haha) songs from Spring Awakening, or There's a Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q.

As far as pop songs go, 'Somebody' by Bonnie McKee is a GORGEOUS ballad for an alto that would show off your voice.
Break a leg!! :)

Well, there still are pop Broadway songs you could sing, which would probably be better for an audition. I'm in high school musical at a theater downtown where i live, and they require you to sing a Broadway song for your audition. If you're an alto, I'm just a girl who can't say no (from Oklahoma!) is a good one, along with almost any song from my fair lady! Hope i could help!

Well are you are soprano, mezzo or an alto?

If you are a soprano I would definatly go with something from Christina Aguilera her songs show off a lot of range.
However I probably wouldn't go with "Genie in a Bottle" as my first choice. Maybe something off of her "Stripped" cd or "Back to Basics" cd.

Also, have you explored any musicals that have pop style songs. That would be the route I would go because most songs from musicals show off a lot of range. Maybe something from "Wicked", especially if your in the mezzo/alto range. A lot of Idina Menzel's songs are in that range. But if you are a soprano Kristen Chenowith's songs would be good too. If you would go that route my suggestion to you would be the song "The Wizard and I."

i think it would depend on your range. nothing too fast. NOT genie in a bottle. i don't think they'd take you seriously. good luck. and i know, i don't really consider high school musical an appropriate choice for a musical either.
