... give the FBS a try? I am pretty sure they could take the spot of Baylor or Florida International, or one of the other teams that don't seem to deserve to be in the upper division.

yes, I realize they couldn't just up and decide to go up a division... maybe I should have worded it; should they be given a shot at Div-1A

But; not all of their programs would have to go 1A, would they? Missouri State, for example, plays 1A Basketball (and occassionally make the tourney {sweet 16 in 2001 or 02}, but 1AA football (and suck at it)

You have to look at the overall sports program of the school and not only the football program when considering a move to Division 1A. While they have a very good football team, and have shown they could be competitive in !A level play, the other sports at the school may suffer by the move. They may not be as prepared for the move in basketball, baseball, and women's sports. and they may consider themselves more competitive in those sports at their current level.

Other schools, have to make these decisions in their sports frequently, and have some difficulty after the move. Marshall has been mentioned, they would be in a better position considering the size of the school in Division 1AA.

I am often amazed when I see a comparison of the sizes of some of the division 1A schools.

Texas has 60,000 students, Alabama has 22,000 students. Yet the University of Alabama has a stadium (Bryant-Denny Stadium) which has a capacity of 92,138, and has sold out every home game since 1988. It is that level of Alumni support that enables a schools athletic programs to be successful in Division 1A.

Yes, I think App State is good enough, and deserves to be in Division I...

No, I'm sure they prefer winning championships on the field. In the FBS they'd have to win votes, not football games, and apparently that's just not their style.
