hi
It is just a phase in the evolution of human life. What you criticise as superstition to day was a good custom of an early period relevant to the prevailing situations then.
Similarly what you may fancy as a meaningful belief to day may become a superstition tomorrow.
So they are good during the relevant periods

I don't know whether to believe in superstitions or not, but I take precautions not to break a mirror, walk under a ladder, or even to not split a pole because I don't know if the bad luck will hit me the next day or ten years from now.

There is a hint of superstition in all religious belief.
For example, I met a Jewish guy who was terrified of eating a turkey sandwich because it had cheese on it. He told me he was thinking about the rule from the Old Testament, to not eat meat and cheese at the same time. I told him it was okay in this case because turkey is poultry and does not give milk. But he was quite fearful and would not eat the turkey sandwich.
I do not let a black cat cross my path when I am driving in the car....I will beep my horn at it and scare it off. I think of it as a good backup, just in case that cat really is a bad omen.

Hmm. In a sense. I guess, my luck is backward. I pick up a heads up penny, something bad happens. I walk under a ladder, and am filled with confidence ((Or if I was feeling bad, I would feel better))
Four leaf clovers never work for me. I'm always hyper on Friday 13ths. Halloween is the birthday of one of my best, sweetest, smartest, kindest friends.

I'm pretty agnostic. But very open to evidence that someone could present that would show me that following and or observing any superstitions would help.
