In the end, they stayed, once the snow set in, because they loved objects so much. If they had left the wagons full of dressers, lamps, tables, etc, behind and moved on through the pass with just themselves, and their horses, and enough food to get to the next staion, they would have survived. The thought of leaving family heirlooms behind bothered them, so they stayed...thinking the snow would end, and the pass would clear, and they could then go on withall their possessions. They were idiots. It snowed more, not less, and they were stranded. They died for possessions.
