I've always used lego to build the things I see on tv, but now my parents say i'm too old, but quite frankly I see this as just another artistic outlet.
I can draw and I am currently playing guitar.. so why can't I use my lego.

I feel my parents are look at it too narrowly..after all..its not like I'm asking for action figures and stuff. There are people in technical colleges that use lego to build their models. How can I convince my parents that lego is more than just a toy.

i'm only 16, and if all goes well i'm be in university for the nex 8 years and i'll return as a grown man...so i'd like to enjoy my youth while i have it. quitely frankly I really doubt that I'd have the amount of free time as i have now when i'm a professional (if all goes well)

I think ukquilter has a point about your parents perhaps thinking you spend too much time in your room, or too much time doing things like Legos etc, and *not* doing other things you "should be doing at your age" --which could be a lot of things.

I don't know if that's true of course in your situation, but I think you should ask them to be specific about exactly why they don't want you doing it.

If it is something like that, you can proceed from there (and perhaps show them that you are, or will intentionally be, more social, or more responsible about your chores, or whatever). Or, if you have a bit of high-functioning autism or something, you could help them understand what things are "normal" for you, and what you should be working on perhaps too.

If it's not something like that though, at least you'll be able to address the issue knowing what they're really thinking.

Good luck,

Diane B.

P.S. Either way, you might also want to show them the very advanced things people are doing with Legos too (from online, etc.).

The first thing you have to understand is that being a parent is the hardest job in the world. We are constantly trying to do what we think is best for our children and we use our own childhoods and past mistakes to come to our decisions. But this is your life and your future and you have to do what makes you happy. Using Legos is not only a vallid form of artistic communication( believe me there are ALOT more questionable forms out there) but it is also extremely difficult. You are transfoming a 2D image into a 3D model and it takes the mind of both an artist and an engineer to do that. Who knows where this could lead you- architecture, the models they use in films, sculptures, toymaker, the list is endless. The way to convince your parents that Legos are more than toys to you is by repeatedly explaining your interest in them in clear and mature ways. Try not to become emotional during your conversations then they wont see you as their little kid but as their smart, talented child who is dedicated and motivated. Trust me, eventually your parents will come around.

You didn't say how old you are. Maybe they are worried that you spend too much time in your room and should be more interested in social activities. My children are 26 and 28, and still have their collections of Lego Technic, but I think this is in case they have children sometime in the future.

When I worked, one of our managers built with legos. He was 50 or 60 at the time. Tell your parents there are much worse things you could be doing with your time.

possibly they mistake wisdom with intelligence. a 10 year previous and a 40 year previous could be the two as smart, yet needless to say the 40 year previous will seem greater smart by fact they have amassed greater wisdom over the years. mum and dad arent unavoidably greater smart than their little ones, yet they have greater existence adventure so for this reason greater wisdom that they've of their potential. for this reason it does make sense for a discern to sense greater smart than their little ones, yet they equivocate the be conscious smart with knowledgable. So particularly, they're purely greater knowledgable, and that's high-quality for them to sense this sort, seeing it quite is actual. till the youngster is a hyper genius new child prodigy. yet if so, the discern might nevertheless be greater knowledgable approximately existence oftentimes.
