Use your local resources. Often times a bank will open an account to receive donations just like your talking about. So I'd start by bringing pictures and a clear explanation of the situation typed out on a single sheet of paper asking for help in raising community support for the family. If there is a local bank (as opposed to a national Bank Of America) I'd start there. They are often more connected to your community. There may also be other resources in your town. Social services may be able to help you organize fund raising events. And get the word out through local papers. Contact the paper and get them to run the story including the name of the account that people can donate to. (of course you're going to want to get the okay from your friends before you go public with their information). The more people you can gather around you the better your chances of raising significant funds.
And bless you for caring. Keep strong in following your desire to help!

If you are in a place warm, a car wash is fun. A can drive in your neighborhood(go around and ask people for empty cans to donate, then you return them for money). Lemonade stand. Etc. Then you can find another organization, like your school, the township or something like that to give the money to!!!!

Start with any foundations that work with that kind of illness (similar to American Cancer Society). Go to banks to ask if they would manage donations. Go to anywhere with a cash register to ask if you could put containers in the store.

I would start with a committee of people to help you.

I would also do different fundraisers, such as car-washes, raffles, etc.

Ask local buisnesses if you could put a can, where people could donate money.

Good luck with your friend. I hope all goes well.
