I am mightily offended. The word starts with an F, which is a strong reminder of that German town, F**k, that is a taboo word. It continues with an L, which suggests lying, continues with an O, which reminds some people of a certain opening in a woman's body, and ends with WER, which is really weird.
The PC word is Blossom.

Well... someone might take it as a hippie reference -- and it seems hippies aren't that popular nowadays.
Who here is old enough to remember "Flower Power"?

P.S. I've noticed the extreme touchiness in people over the last few years, too. You can especially see it on the Internet, on blogs, and with e-mails, too. People have to resort to smilies (and all their variations) to make sure their intentions are understood, for fear of accidentally offending the reader.
Something must be wrong somewhere. Back in the days when people wrote (or even typed) letters on paper, there was no need to give snark warnings or confirm peaceful intent with symbols or icons.
Is it that people have become touchier, or perhaps that bad spelling, poor grammar, less varied and complex vocabulary, and extreme hastiness in writing (thank you, text messaging!) are producing shallower, less thought-out writings that leave themselves open to misinterpretation?

No pet.
Worked with a lady who smoked 60 a day. She called everyone flower or love. On the phone one day to a male customer he took offence at being called love and flower, by a man.He saw the funny side when the lady said she was a mother to 4 kids.

Depends on the context.
As an example some other 'vegetable' words that in some context can be offensive:
Fruit
Banana
Plum
Coconut
Peanut
Mellon
White-bread
The list goes on.
