My understanding is that they "jack" themselves up. As one section on the ground is installed, jack it up and install the next under that until get the desired height. Sort of like growing from the ground up.

As Mr MIlls said, they more or less build themselves. A mobile crane is used to start the process but to after that they jack themselves up and insert new sections under thier own power.

It might seem a strange answer but ........... other cranes are used!.. Special mobile ones that actually erect the towers. See it all the time in Spain.

They build themselves from the ground up, by lifting each section hydraulically and then inserting another section.

nb: smaller mobile cranes are often used to lift the boom up onto the tower first.
