While they do contain real pieces of cloth and the card companies try to ensure they are accurately described (whenever they bother to do so), mistakes are known to have been made in the past.
Forgeries have also occurred, primarily replacing or modifying swatches with bits of patches, as patches or other uniform regalia (except pinstripes, which are quite common) tend to command higher prices on the secondary market.

Your best bet is to go with any jersey card produced by Upper Deck. They are known for their game-used cards being authentic.

I pulled out the jersey of one card and put a piece of my underwear in and sold it, no one knew the difference.
