I like greys, but ... I guess you don't! Have you considered taupe (or 'greige')? The taupe/greige tones can be very light to darkish and are definitely 'modern'. More interesting than beige, warmer than grey. I'm not much a fan of white walls, but have you thought about a grey-toned white? It just might work in your situation. Another option might be a light purple-grey ... that would pick up on both the charcoal in the furniture and the red tones in the acacia ... just a thought! I like the toned-down green idea ... maybe the color consultant was right! Keep in mind that the end result is what matters, NOT whether you LOVE each individual color in the room. The green would play off the reddish tones in the flooring (red and green are opposites), while the charcoal is a true neutral. The lack of light is a problem ... but you could offset that with some 'pops' of white/off-white around the room (toss pillows, art, a lampshade) and add some sparkle with a mirror and/or some accessories with a metallic finish. Could you trim the tree? Hahaaaa ... OK, maybe not!

A few years ago I was in Reykjavik at this time of year and it was dark pretty much all day! What a hoot that was. The funny thing was it was much warmer than in Maine! Go figure. It gets dark here at around four PM and doesn't get light until nearly seven AM.

I'm in West Sussex in the UK.
The time is 4:42pm GMT.
In keeping with this time of day at this time of year throughout the UK I can honestly say it is getting dark outside.

It's 11:43 am here in Toronto, Canada. But we're getting a snow storm so the sky is darker than normal.
It's early for us to be getting this...
