If an employee simply scans the gift card at the register to which they are logged on to, they can void the transaction an pocket the brand new activated gift card. It works, and seems too easy. What are the risks? just seems like a little bonus if you ever need some extra money, especially if your work has the visa gift cards.

Jail would be a risk. Also inability to get another job. Mainly though, you would be proving that you are dishonest.

Sure they can catch you. Just how would depend on their audit procedures - but for anything that easy do do fraudulently, the company is likely to have some audits.
Voids are such an obvious place for theft that most employers audit those fairly carefully.

You know of course that is theft, there are laws against it, and you can be prosecuted and jailed for doing it. You'll be fired for sure. And your future employment prospects will be very bleak.

I'd be careful if I were you ...

I got a call from a manager from Sears. Someone used a card that was apparently scanned. The manager asked if I had done a transaction with a gift card recently. I explained the situation and it went back to the cashier - who apparently had done it before and passed out the cards to people she knew from what the manager told me. I don't know what happened to her - I guess it depends on the total amount of fraudulant cards she can be linked to.

Also my aunt is a cashier in Walmart and she says more employees lose their jobs due to theft from cards and goods. So employers are watching.

And everyone pays because they tack on losses to the cost of goods.

As a Loss Prevention Manager for a major retail store, I can tell you for a fact that you would get caught. The store first of all has computers that register every transaction so they can go back to the transaction and review who scanned it. Second the gift card has a tracking number so when it is used. Then there are the cameras, and intelex systems that can record for 30 to 90 days worth of activity. Retail stores know that 90% of its losses are from internal, which means we watch employees more than customers for dishonesty. I just recently arrested an associate for 10,000 in credit card fraud. Also the store depending on which one will usually build the case to the point of being a felony. Then you still have to pay the store back and in most states its legal for the store to recover up to 5 times the value you stole. so 1000 = 5,000. I would strongly urge you not to go down this road.

That is shady. If there are cameras your drawer will be off and they will eventually find out that it is you who is the thief. Ask yourself if a $20.00 gift card is more than what your check is every week. You are what is wrong with the world today and hopefully you will go to jail. Tax payers are paying for your f-ups.
