He destroyed the hard drives not the entire computer. He said he did it to protect personal data that might be on the hard drives like credit card numbers of individuals who uses the computers.
When you "erase" a hard drive all you really do is strip away the file names. If the computer does not see a filename it will write over the data. Until the data is written over a person can still read the data.
Not sure this was the best way to handle it but there is his reasoning.

for people who want a linky inspect my source line. and there is not any good reason.. surprisingly in case you, as Mike Huckabee did , plan to run for President. whether no longer something undesirable is on them it seems that destructive

Were they the computers with the green screens? Those things were huge. You'd probably need a tanker to get rid of those.
