Definitely Shikamaru's the Man! Especially now that Gaara does not have the power of the One Tail Kyubi anymore, Shika's gonna kick Gaara's butt into kingdom come. And let us remember ... Gaara was beaten by a rather weak akatsuki member and Shikamaru beat a very strong akatsuki. The list goes on and on but it's so troublesome to type them all ... don't you think? =p

even with or without the shukaku gaara can still control sand with his mind even when the shadow possesion is cast gaaras sand will get shikamaru. Shikamaru has a lot of jutsu way more than gaaras but are all used for buying time and diversion

gaara cuz he has about 6 times more chackra then shikamaru as well as the sand shield that deflects all harm coming to his body even if it's from gaara himself so the shadow possesion justsu wouldn't work even though gaara does not have the sand spirit in him he can still manipulate sand and it still comes to his aid and he's still crazy strong it would be a match but gaara would win

that's an extremely good question gaara has extreme power but has problems with it while shikamaru is a genius but a little to impatient. i think that your idea that shikamaru is a good idea but in one hospitol ebisode shikamaru's shadow posetion jutsu had virtually no effect, but i'm sure by the time those two would battle shikamaru could probaly win

Shikamaru can beat anyone given proper circumstances like surroundings in gaara's case it's him losing his shukaku.

I think Shikamaru might be overpowered. His strength is in the power of his leadership. He is a great leader and inspires those around him, which means he works fantastically as part of a team. However if it were just Gara against Shikamaru in a one on one battle, I think Gara would have the advantage of strength, size and Ninjutsu.

I'd say Gaara-kun since he's the Kazakage and he has way much more Chakra than Shikamaru-kun.
