haha its funny to read all of the asnwer given here. But I would have to say it depends on how you look at it. When you buy a BMW you are buying the prestige, level of quality, and engineering that stands behind the car. Every BMW has a near perfect 50/50 weight ratio and their amazing rear wheel drive, smooth reliable engines, and outstanding handling makes a BMW...and thats why I bought one....infact several. No other manufacturor can say that about every single one of their cars. So no......they really arn't overpriced. If you dont car eabout all those qualities, then dont buy a BMW because you will end up questioning your decision in the future. I bought one and never looked back. If you want reasonably priced German engineering buy a Volkswagen...i did!

Yes, maybe 10-15%. But I still own one ('06 330i) because it offers an excellent blend of sport & luxury.

Something like the G35 would have been more cost effective but I was not as comfortable in it. Also didn't like the styling of the Maxima, another competitive cheaper car.

If purchased brand new then yes, they are a bit much YET have nearly no equal in their price range.
Buy one used and you'll get 50 times MORE car then you'll EVER get out of any used Acura, Toyota, Honda etc.

Yes.

And yes, there's a "but" . . .

. . . but, they're well made and a very high quality car.

There's no single "best car". The reason is, there is a myriad of criterion on which to judge a car.

For those to whom speed is the ultimate criterion, BMW may pull a distant 4th or 5th to a Bugatti Veyron as the ultimate driving machine.

For those to whom price is an important criterion, a used Dodge Oldsmobile or Ford will have to do.

Many value fuel mileage above all else, in which case a Honda or Toyota comes in first.

For some people the 'snooty' consideration is all there is. If it isn't German, it just doesn't rate!

There's so many types of people to please, and dozens of automakers trying to appeal to them.

As for myself, I don't like new cars. I can't stand warning buzzars and lockouts. When I want my car out of gear, I WANT MY CAR OUT OF GEAR. I don't want to have to put my foot on the brake. And when I want to remove the key from the ignition, I don't want to have to put the gear shift in 'park'.

Plus I don't want a car with an onboard computer that will determine when I have to buy another car by causing an undetectible electrical problem after the warranty period has expired or will electronically tattle to the EPA when my emmission equipment isn't working properly.

I'm quite happy with my 40 year old Chevy thankyouverymuch.

they are even admitting how poor they used to be, and how that they are tyring to improve !!!!

No. It is a luxury car, and you pay what you get for. Audi's are priced slightly lower, depending on models, and they are very worthy to compete with BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes are overpriced, but you do get the prestige of a Benz.

Heck yes they are. Their are domestic luxury cars that are just as nice and even nicer for alot less, plus the quality and reliability are just as good. The blind eye cant see that. BMW target the rich and they fall for it because the name BMW in the" keeping up with jonses " areas is a big status symbole and thats what the rich like so it sells.
BMW is very proud of their cars, and the price shows it. The cheaper priced auto makers are proud of their stuff to, but choose to build and price in the down to earth range so everyone can get quality.
Bob has a lawnmower that he is proud of, and bobs neighbor has the exact same one as bob. They both went to sell their used mowers, same condition, but bob wanted 100 dollars more for his because he put a bumpersticker on his mower that said " Id rather be fishin", and bob thought it gave the mower more style, which made him a little more proud of his mower than his neighbor. Bobs neighbor thought bob was a crook for selling the exact same mower for alot more because of a stupid sticker, when in all reality, it wasn't any better and wont mow any better.
Both neighbors eventually sold their mowers, Bobs still for more. The new owners are very happy with both, but one of them has 100 dollars more than the other which he used to renew the tags on his American car.

Not if they're used. BMW's, like all german autos, were designed to be reasonably safe at Autobahn speeds, versus American cars, that were designed to go about 80-90MPH. The crash tests pretty much say it all. Look up NHTSA crash tests and decide which cars you would like to be in in an accident. Most wear items, like tie rod ends and brake pads, are reasonably priced. Their ABS systems and skid control features rival nearly everything else. Most mechanical problems are traceable to owner neglect. Read owner's manual and follow instructions. You can't go wrong.
