gasoline evaporates quickly, so you will be losing gas that way, also as evaporation occurs, the gasoline's chemistry changes and the amount of certain compounds increases, these compounds are harmful to your engine and fuel system.
Both factors work to significantly decrease gas mileage. A new gas cap will more than pay for itself over time.

it will effect gas expansion and give you false reading on gauges.. gas can't slop out but may let in dirt! gas cap creates a vacuum so that may cause problem too!
