I am wanting to learn to do fusible applique and I know the steps but what I am worrying about is if I do a scene, maybe a winter scene and there is lots of layering, how can my sewing machine handle it? Do I need a special machine to do fusible applique? How do I cut down on the bulk without making a super simple looking picture?

I wouldn't worry about the thicknesses if you were going to sew, but most fusibles will gum up your machine because of the glue. Fusible doesn't usually require sewing. You just stick them on with a hot iron. But if you have a lot of layers, you will always have bulk. Just cut away the parts that will be covered. Leave a quarter inch to be covered.

My machine handles it just fine. I do however only sew over each spot once. It does not seem bulky to me. If I am going to overlap another appplique, I stop stitching where the next one would pick up.

Hope this helps!

I've been doing appliqué for years, and never had problems with layers (on domestic Bernina machines). Mine will sew denim seams without problem, as will many other domestic machines.
