apparently on a morning show a few days ago (maybe on nbc) there was this guy who went on there and said that he had bought a new computer and had only been connected to the internet for about 20 days and this spy software told him that around 50 people were spying on him, whether it be his ebay account or whatnot. what's the software called?

The Internet has both Genuine and Fake anti-spyware softwares, the latter is more dangerous as it infects the system and asks the user to pay for removing the spyware.
Ask him to use Spybot - Search & Destroy, it's at the moment one of the best free anti-spyware software.

Has to be a 100% scam. Your antispyware, is not going to tell you that "you have 50 people spyware on you".
If something like described happens to your pc, you have been hit hard with scam adware and need to run a really good antispyware like the free version of Superantispyware
This program will always find what all other miss, plus you get daily auto updates.

There are many blinking ads / scammers telling people that they are being spied on the computers running slow!
Panic!
Some are these ads are spyware & hacker designed software by clicking on them you give permision to scan your hard drive files.
If they are legitimate ads they would not tell you to pay to have the spyware removed by purchasing their software 1st.
They would give a free trial 1st.
If you dont recognize the company name.
DO NOT CLICK ON IT OR RUN THE SOFTWARE PERIOD!!!
Spybot search and destroy works good for a free download
I still use a product I choose myself.

there are many anti-spyware, but don't just surf google to get one, or else you may download a malicious spoof.
As somebody else has stated, I prefer much better Spyware Doctor. The cons are that that Spyware Doctor is not free, but (...there is always a "but") but Spyware Doctor is free if you get it trough Google Pack! since many friends were asking me the same instruction on how to do it, I've written a little page with detailed info on how to do it, if it can be of any help

The good about antispyware soft is that you can install many of them, while with anti-virus you cannot.

The people spying are usually marketing firms gathering info. Download your anti-spy on yahoo. It will show cookies that are planted in your computer to feed the marketing machine.

his computer was infected with spyware, a kind of virus that over time it'll accumulate and slow the computer down. there are many programs that will tell you how much you have but more importantly delete it from your computer. My favorite is Adaware made by lavasoft.

the program was probably spyware itself, there are lots of them around. i've even seen a website that opens your cd drive! to protect your computer google spybot search & destroy.
