40 refers to HSBC bank, but I'm not sure the rest is actually valid (its def not First Direct, all theirs are 40-47-something). Call or go into your local HSBC and ask them, they will tell you.

You've probably been allocated it by the CIA or NSA, because you may have been 'red flagged' up on their computers for some reason or another - have you ever said anything derogatory about Americans - I know it's so very easy to do inadvertently?!!!

its an hsbc corporate sort code. probably for paying credit cards or arrears/collections.

It's an HSBC number, if you call one of the helplines they might tell you which Branch.
