what if there was a log in there would you solve it the same?
EX: log2 (3x+2)+log2 (x-5)=4

(x + 7)(x - 1) = (x + 1)(x + 1)
x^2 + 6x - 7 = x^2 + 2x + 1
6x - 7 = 2x + 1
4x = 8
x = 2

if it's (x+1)(x-1)=(x+1)^2 and you're looking for the value of x, then x=-1

Just multiply them out. You need a second term in the first binomial, (x+ ?)
