Well, I know exactly what you mean AND how you feel...
But my own philosophy is not to let crap close my heart down. There is still so much to experience and I have so much to offer-- but if I let the hurt I have experienced shut me off from one of life's most precious gifts, then the heartbreaker in my life has won.
No way will I let that happen. Ever.

I have gained alot of wisdom from a broken heart. And my heart has been broken into bits more times than I care to ever remember.
Still, I patch it up and move on.

But the broken heart heals...and once that happens you can look at the relationship that did not work out as a learning experience...

Once you can do that, you grow emotionally and learn more about what works and does not work... this in turn will help you not only pick a better partner in the future -- but it will also allow you to BE a better partner in the future..

so the broken hearts are necessary - as experience is our best teacher...

a child does not learn to walk without first getting up and falling down a whole bunch of times -- for if they never fall and get hurt - they do not learn what NOT to do to keep their balance...

I would rather to have loved and lost. The experience gives you perspective on what went right what went wrong and if I identified that I had done something that could have changed the relationship then I have learned a lesson that I can now use in future relationships.

While I would far rather not have lost my darling beloved Gwenneth, the world goes as it will not as you or I would wish it.
I had 42 years with Gwen and after her death suffered anger, suicidal depression and alcoholism. Upon recovery I found friends among those I would never otherwise met on answers.
I have tried to be a better person for this.

The saying is actually "It is better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all," and it was written by Lord Alfred Tennyson. It of course refers to the delight one feels when in the process of getting to know someone, falling in love, the relationship's maturation and the fact that its evenutal demise - in spite of the pain, is still somehow worth it.
The sentiment you're expressing is closer to Samuel Butler's: "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have lost at all."
Sorry about the break-up. It's awful to go through.

You gotta live life to the fullest and love is part of that, otherwise, youre missing out on some good moments. Nothing is forever, people, love....but while you have it it's wonderful and your life is enriched by your experiences.
