Avira AntiVir PE Classic is an excellent, light and VERY good antivirus program. It is completely free and perfect for laptops (I use it on mine).

Use Firefox as your internet browser with the addons "Noscript" and "Adblock plus" - this will stop any browser hijacks, etc.

SUPERAntiSpyware is a VERY good antispyware program - scan using SAS at least once a week - It is completely free.

If you don't have a router, then I suggest you use a software firewall too. Comodo personal firewall PRO is completely free and VERY good - it can be complicated at first, but it is well worth learning how to use it.

well firefox is the most secure server and free avg is a good anti virus software
