I found something a friend of mine would love. A shot glass chess set. He's an avid chess player, much like myself, and is 'liquid cooled' if you know what I mean. However, I already got him his gift and I don't want to give him too much as what I already got him is much more than what I got his wife (also a friend of mine) and I don't want to show favourites or anything trivial and stupid like that. Should I get it now and hold onto it for next year?

I would go ahead and buy it now and put it away for next year. You'll be ahead of the game next year by already having one present bought. Is this something that after Christmas would go on sale? If so, you might want to consider waiting till after Christmas to get it and save some money. We always start our Christmas shopping the day after Christmas. We save a lot of money that way and get things we know friends and family will love.

I often buy christmas presents all year long. When you see something that someone might like why wait? Besides, it's probably on sale now for the holidays. Lots of items are seosanaly priced, meaning you can get a sweater cheaper in the summer than you can in the winter. And you can always give it to them for a birthday present too. It's a very smart way to shop!!

Hi Dr. E!

Listen, if you found an additional gift that you know he'll love, absolutely wait until next year!

It's funny, whenever I do that, I find that MY excitement over the gift makes me want to wrap it up & give it right away.

But since I'm no Howard Hughes, I try to control my impulse to play Santa Claus, so I have a great gift for next year.

In fact, I do quite a bit of Christmas shopping AFTER the Holidays, so I can pick up bargains on things that are overpriced during the Holiday Season!

Well you can keep it for next year, just dont forget where you put it! Or maybe give it as a birthday present to your friend. either way I'm sure your friend will appreciate it! If you decided to give it now for Christmas present, buy the wife a bottle of wine, I bet she'll like that-that is if she drinks also!

Get her a cheap stirling silver ring from winners or marshals some discount store like that. You can find one under 30$ and it won't be too cheap that it will turn her finger green. You have to get her something wether she's a brat or not. My brother is 19 and has never had a job so I told him I'm not getting him anything but I felt bad so I'm getting him a tie for a job interview. Haha.

Hey, hold onto it till next year! I do this often, come across more than one gift idea for a person and I keep it for next year. Or I have given it for their Birthday, saved me a trip to the store for the birthday gift! LOL Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

I say but it when you see it!.. I try to buy a gift each month to avoid the rush. Using the $10 JCPenney sends each month is used for the purpose. My Disney points from my CC are used for that. My gold points from Friday are used for that. There are so many ways to shop without spending money. I Spent 3.18 on Christmas!!
My problem is I forget where I hid the gifts, I found last years gift when I remodeled my spare room.

Get it now! Avid chess players don't lose their interest over time, so you don't have to worry about his not liking it next year. (I assume you have closet space for this thing and won't forget why you bought it. You could label it to make sure: "2008 Xmas gift for Buddy.")

Or if you're really excited about it, and hoping he'll invite you over to play a match or two on this set in 2008, how about giving it to him this year and saving what you already bought for next? (Assuming it will keep, of course.)

And don't worry too much about your friend's wife... you and your friend are tight and you like the same things. If you're worried about her feeling left out, catch her before gift-exchange time and confidentially tell her, "Hey, I found Tim this terrific gift. It's just perfect -- do you think he'll like this?" She will probably catch your excitement about it and not take her less-elaborate item as evidence you don't like her.

Sure. That's investing your money in next year. As long as you have somewhere to put it that you will remember easily. If it were me, I would put it in a box or closet and by the next Christmas I would be tearing everything apart trying to find it.

I would go for it. I did that one year, and it was so great come Christmas time. SOOO much less stress. So if you see something, get it while you see it. Next year you'll be happy you did.
