Because Big business wants to keep it that way.
I live in the UK and am proud to live in a country that cares for the health of its population.
Healthcare in the USA actually costs more than that in the UK, and while it is great (as it is anywhere) for those who can pay to go private, overall, it is not as good as healthcare in most developed countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care#Economics Statistically, you are going to live longer, and have a baby that is less likely to die soon after birth in almost every other western country than in the US. How is that right for the richest and most powerful country in the world?

this is an answer from a Dr.. who is paid by insurance companies who never pay .. I decorated the walls of my waiting room with checks paid by insurance varying from 1 cents to 99 cents...
the answer to your question is simple... something called HMO.. it is a system done with big promises to help people, at the end you pay the insurances the insurances get rich . the patient get a very poor service the Dr does not get paid...
to be more detailed, I had a chance to work overseas, Canada and th USA, (where i practice now (NY) and there is no ideal system .. because patients Drs and payers are human, every one of these wants the best for himself... look at your car insurance, how much you pay in a life time and how much you collect? they are the one who get rich they did not invent a car insurance company to help people, they built it to give jobs to people an grow.... they will do their best to grow and pay the least possible, if you cost them too much they kick you out.. medical insurance company ar not run by Mother Theresa, but by people who want your money
why the government does not increase the taxes rather than insurance companies? because the medical care is getting extremely expansive, with the new technology, tests, service, and if the goverment does that (like is Canada) you fall in another extreme.. no resources, waiting time to see a Dr, get a test for ever....
why the medical care is getting expansive too? due to increase litigation law suit documentation and increase overheads... papers work and a lot of garbage in the medical care..
hope I answered
i WOULD LIKE TO SIGN FRUSTRATED Dr

We pay plenty in taxes now for "health care." Look at Medicare for one. Premiums have more than doubled in a decade and benefits have not. (Premium 1998 $43.80, 2008 $96.40.) HMO Medicares cut their prescription benefits in many cases to meet up with the stupid donut hole coverage of the feds. Medicaid is another taxpayer funded system--rife with abuse and rationed care.
The government messes it up every time. They also favor the handful of large insurance companies that dominate the market.
This was done on the LIE that doctors were ripping people off and managed care would save money. It made a bunch of lawyers and businessmen multi-millionaires, reduced care, and enslaved doctors.
Universal health care does NOT work in ANY country where it exists. They all ration. They all jack up taxes. Many also have their people have PRIVATE insurance ON TOP OF THE TAXES THEY PAY and keep trying to shift MORE onto the PRIVATE sector--like FRANCE. You can see that FACT at their web site.
Quick round up of FACTS:
The Fraser Institute (Canadian) was hired to determine what was going on in Alberta and said by 2016 that HALF of the province's budget would go to health care if they keep the current system. By 2030, 100% of the budget would be consumed by health care. (“Canada’s health
system dream turns to nightmare,” 11 June 2004, Dr. Glueck).
Let's also realize that enough Canadian doctors find the system so stressful that WE get 500 of them a year from that small country coming to the US. (Bell, “Step into the single-payer rabbit hole,” April 2001, amsa.org). Also a 2003 survey of Canadian doctors found that nearly half were burnt out and 12% had thoughts of suicide (staffweb.uleth.ca).
The government is thinking about delisting some services (not offering them anymore). Thankfully there has been a proliferation of ILLEGAL for-profit health centers through Canada so Canadians can get care without leaving Canada. This is so needed that the president of the Canadian Medical Association headed such an ILLEGAL facility. They're illegal not because these are not qualified doctors, but because if the government offers a service, then the private sector is not supposed to in Canada. ("Individual Freedom vs. Government Control,” 1 August 2007, nationalreview.com).
Great Britain has the oldest national health system started in 1948. “Staff are being laid off, and deficits are at an alltime high (£1.07bn for 2005-2006)” (Hazel Blears, LabourParty Chair and Minister Without Portfolio, labourachievements. blogspot.com/2006/08/23-investment-innhs...
Alex Smallwood of the British Medical Association was quoted in the
Scotsman as saying: “’Rationing is reduction in choice. Rationing has become a necessary evil. We need to formalise rationing to prevent an unregulated, widening, postcodelottery of care. Government no longer has a choice.’” (Moss,
“NHS rationing is ‘necessary evil,’ says doctors,” 26 June 2007).
In France, 80% of the public have supplemental health insurance through their employers according to their web site (ambafrance-us.org). Private medical care in France is providing more than 50% of the surgeries and more than 60% of cancer case treatment. Vision and dental care are not well covered there. “The public system is facing chronic deficits and recent cost containment policies have not proved very successful.” The government is interested in
having more of the tab picked up by private insurance (Buchmueller & Couffinhall, “Private Health Insurance in France,” 2004, oecd.org).
Yes there are problems in Japan, the Netherlands, and Sweden as well for sure. Universal health care does NOT work. Governments overpromise, jack up taxes, ration medicine, and more.

I don't want to pay more taxes and it would cost me more in taxes than what I pay for my insurance. I want to know why others refuse to pay for their insurance. While I was going to school my wife supported us and she made a little over 20,000 a year and yet we still managed to pay for insurance for a family of 5. It has to be a priority for the people not an option.
