hi all,

just wondering what the average electric cost is for a one bedroom flat with one person.

currently i am paying about £20-£25 a week.
i dont leave things on standby (always turn off at mains)
i cant afford this and i dont even have my night storage heaters on because that would use more and trust me the lowest temperature in my living room i've checked at 7pm last night and it was 4.6 degrees c

any suggestions?

please

thanks
francis

There is no "average" cost of electricity, but that does seem excessive for a 1 bedroom flat.

The biggest consumer of electricity is heating. So look at what heating appliances you have. If you have an immersion heater to heat your water try turning the thermostat on the tank down a little, or change the "on" time.

Electric cooker? Try using the microwave oven instead.

Other heavy users are electric shower (though not on for long), fan heaters, washing machine, dishwasher.

One day when you are in the flat all day, take meter readings every hour and see when you are using the most. As a rough guide, day units cost around 9 pence, night units about half that.

Hope this helps.

I would say you should be looking at on average over a year approx £50 a month but thats with heating on !. Take a read of your meter every day at the same for 5 days and contact your supplier. They will be able to check your average daily usage and advise if seems too high or not. They can then take you through a usage checklist to check actual usage or even check the meter as it may be faulty. Also shop around between suppliers - you may get a better deal from another supplier

I live in a 3 bedroom flat, we have economy 7 and our electricity is on a keypad metre where you top it up with a card, like you can with pay as you go phones, we get through at least £5 a day.

If you own the house go to uswitch.com and see if there is a cheaper provider, we rent ours so we're stuck with the top up thing and economy 7 which is expensive for us.

Ours works out at £700 a year for 3 bed semi.

But we have Gas central heating, if you have electric heating that is whats costing you.
