Hey, life is good! We don't put up a tree and we don't go anywhere. We do exchange presents...one a day for someone (not always the same person and it has to be at least one person, but can be more) for the 12 days leading up to Christmas. Mind you, these are utilitarian items...clothes and such. But, then on Christmas Eve after Candle Light Service, we open all the stuff everyone had been giving us throughout the season...you know, from church, work, etc.

Not everyone celebrates the same, although the vast majority bought into the Christmas decor thing for which the merchants are happy. I'm sure Grandma's and Grandpa's house is very festive and decked to the halls with all the traditional Christmas finery.

Your little friend needs to back off and you did good to stand up for yourself.

Well, well there are no stupid questions first of all. Now you must remember that we all raise our families different and if you were raised without a tree and all the hustle and bustle of christmas then thats what you know and that is the tradition that you will probably pass down to your family.Your cousin was raised to believe different thats all and guess what? Niether one of you are wrong. When someone does something outside of the traditional way of things others especially children have a hard time understanding. The most important thing is you both realize the real reason of Christmas and that is the birth of Christ. God Bless You all

Merry Christmas!! Enjoy your time with your family, including your cousin.
Please don't take the negative comments to heart, they are usually from younger kids. (Hence the cliche 'kids can be so mean'). Accept differences, especially in the Christmas celebration of Christ.
I don't usually participate in these forums, but since I have an 11 yo this was especially interesting. You started a touching conversation.
God bless you and your family!!

If you are eleven your cousin I assume is similar age. You cousin appears to be the product of our commercialist society, granted at eleven I probably was, too. One does not need a tree to express one's joy of God, Christmas, or charity. With time and experience your cousin will figure it out. For the time being just fuggedaboud'em.

lol - yes.

Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. The tree has nothing to do with the Holiday.

It's always fun to practice that tradition, but every family has their own. I'd like to practice yours one year too. (Decorating takes sooo much time!)

Merry Christmas!

Yes. How old is your cousin? That might say why she said tht because she could be younger. Don't take it personal if she's younger. But if she's older, than thats really surprising!

P.S Im around your age by a few years (not by like 10 or 5)!

DURRR Christmas aint about putting up a tree... its a religious festival that seems to have been put on the back burner so that people spend loads of money...

I agree with you that having a Xmas tree does not automatically make one a better Christian, the focus should be on Jesus.

i tree is just to remind you it is a special occasion, and special time of the year.. same like on your birthday there is a cake and balloon, and gifts to remind you you were born one day.. although when you were born there were no cake, and no balloons.. if there is no cake it is still your birthday.... the important is that you don't forget Jesus was born that day and get absorbed in the tree and gifts... again similar to your birthday.. if people come to eat the cake and forget to say happy birthday to you it would spoil your birthday
