All of you should research this.
Republicans have consistently voted against anything that might increase voter turnout.
They don't want the people to vote. The more who vote, the less chance republicans have of staying in office. That's the truth, like it or not.
Republicans have never supported things like the "motor/voter laws," which allow people to register to vote at the same time they get their drivers license renewed.
We should not have a holiday, but a full week of voting for elections..7 days where one can vote at their convenience.
Republicans have never supported these ideas.

I have seen this as I have worked 2 jobs where I had to be there first thing in the morning to open for voting (not in my district) and then be on the other side of the city to work my second job till after the polls closed. I don't think making it a holiday will be the answer as how many places close on holidays anyway? And the other idea I saw was making it longer than 1 day. The problem with that is security. Too many things can happen to votes and brings corruption into the picture.
My take on it is, if people REALLY want to vote, they will find the time to do so as there is always the absentee vote when you can not attend in person. Go to www.declareyourself.com for details in your state.

In law, in Canada, you must have a specific amount of hours off work in order to vote. Even so , very many people sleep long or leave earlier.....but they still don't exercise their right to vote. I don't understand why not and they don't seem to care. I find a lot of 'non voters' who complain about how the towns, municipalities, Cities & Government is run. I believe that if you don't vote then after that your opinion is void as well.
I do not believe there is any basis for a National Holiday.

I'd be in favor of it because nobody could use work as an excuse for not voting. But I'm not really sure it would be effective because I always voted, even when I had to work 2-3 jobs. Most people don't vote out of laziness, and my gut instinct tells me a day off isn't going to change that.

You are right - it would make it a special day - it would only be once every other year so the impact on the economy would be minimal and it could be hyped in such a way that folks would be encouraged to vote! It is a shame our voting population turns out in such low numbers.

confident, I even have been saying this for years. lots of people who artwork low salary jobs surprisingly with long hours, have an somewhat annoying time getting off to pass to the polls. My boyfriend is a corrections officer and works from 5:30 am to six:00 pm and has tochronic 40 5 mins to get abode to vote, he will vote early so as that he won't would desire to hurry abode to vote yet many everybody continues to be unsure in the time of early vote casting. At his pastime lunch breaks are in basic terms 15 mins so it won't be able to be achieved at lunch. I doubt which will ensue so I advise everybody to take income of early vote casting. Greshnab: the pastime that I used to artwork at does no longer enable us to off to vote. I worked there for 6 years. I continually vote early yet there have been some people who I worked with that did no longer make it to the polls some circumstances because of the fact they refused to enable them to off. The kicker is--it became right into a central authority pastime. cireengineering: In my section the polls open at 7 am and close at 7 pm. I artwork the polls and each section is diverse.

It is not difficult to vote now. It takes me about 10-15 minutes out of my day. I realize it may take longer in larger cities, but really, it doesn't take that long.
People who are too lazy or apathetic to vote now, won't vote if it is made into a holiday. They will go to the beach or to the mall or somewhere else.
