A man who turned Cuba from a playground for rich Americans into country with literacy and medical services for all its natives who were prepared to support the reforms. He also showed the world how vindictively, pettily, arrogantly and irresponsibly the USA is prepared to use its economic dominance to stifle any threat, real or perceived. He also played Kennedy and Kruschev off against each other which was no mean feat.
And Steven M, you've forgotten or ignored that far from helping Cuba achieve democracy, America supported a string of dictators. OK, nothing new there then but .....you know, give some thought to what you are spouting.

Like everybody else he has his plusses and his minusses. He is by no means the worst tyrant in history but he is no Mother Teresa, either. Cuba now has a higher literacy rate than the US, and in some categories it has better health care than the US does, too. These are undeniably good things. Some people could justify some political repression on the grounds of needing to preserve their Cuban Revolution, and that is not totally unreasonable--Americans who backed the British during our Revolution were dispossessed of their property and sent packing to Canada--their money ironically enough financed our first government. Revolutions by their nature are not pretty. The Cuban one came about largely because the US backed a series of dictators that made the rise of Castro inevitable. Overall I'd give Castro a C.

He was a revolutionary. But like all communist revolutionaries, he took an ideology, and twisted it, turning his nation into a communist dictatorship. I believe the Cubans need to take care of this themselves if they want freedom - just like everyone else in the world. Democracy cannot be given, it must be taken.

He is the reason why the Cuban people are oppressed and do not have any freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and virtually any other freedom that the free world enjoys. He is an oppressor, a commie, a murderer, and a piece of human scum.
