This question really depends on a few aspects of what your looking for, but heres the gist of it all.
Wireless G (802.11g standard) is curently the most widely used wireless standard. If your going to buy a router for a laptop...most laptops right now still only use Wireless G...but if this is the case check the documentation of your laptop to make sure....because some newer laptops are offering Wireless N onboard.
Wireless G is also relatively cheap..a router can cost around 40-60 bucks with transfer rates maxed at 54Mb/s and a range of 400ft.
If you want to build up a home wireless network from scratch and you have the money....Wireless N is the way to go! It is much faster with xfer rates of up to 250Mb/s (lowest round 70-75Mb/s) and has an increased range! However, a router can set u back a couple of hundreds, the wireless cards for it can also be a costly! But if u are using a laptop that has onboard Wireless G...u can get a wireless N homenetwork set up...get a wireless N card for it....and when u go out....u can remove the Wireless N card and reactivate the internal wireless G (though may involve uninstalling/reinstalling drivers) to use ur laptop on the go...bc not all places use wireless N for hotspots has of yet.
Hope this was enough to help!

Wireless-N is fast and there are some cool Dual-band equipment that uses both a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz channel so you can send on one channel and receive on another, speeding things up but not doubling your speed as the manufacturers advertise, mainly because you don't send or received the same amount of stuff. This can be really useful if you are shipping media (movies) between your PC and a game console or media center.
I think the most important thing to remember is that Wireless-N equipment is currently built on Draft 802.11n standard. The standard is subject to change. Besides, to enjoy the advantages of N, your router and your wireless adapter(on you PC and game consoles) need to be from the same manufacturer.
For Web-browsing, watching You-Tube or online movie, listening to streaming music (i-Tunes) , you top speed is also limited to the wire coming into your house (copper cable or phone line) and the modem your ISP gave you. My RoadRunner limits my Internet access bandwidth to Wireless-B speeds!

First thing you should do is see what your wireless device can handle. Their is a cost different between the 2 of them. The G is a lot cheaper.
N does get much better range.

G - 54M
N - 108M
Make sure you have a "N" wireless card in your PC, oe you won't get the benefit of the speed or range available in the "N" technology.
"N" is compatible with "G" wireless cards.

N is better because its faster and has bigger range, but
G is cheaper and more widely used. Most laptops use G.
And no you can't use G on N

remember, fast only means internally. it only counts when your transfering files between computers within your network.
