To what extent (if any) are seals and dogs related? I realise they are different species, but kinda like a horse and donkey or a sheep and goat, are they at all related?

Yes.

Not only are they both members of the order Carnivora, but pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses, etc.) are members of the suborder Caniformia, which literally means "dog-shaped carnivores". This also includes bears ... as well as a superfamily that includes otters, weasels, raccoons, skunks, and red pandas.

Since someone is, for no apparent reason, thumbing everybody down, I give several sources below ... including a scientific paper on the genetic similarities of the Caniforms (that justifies the suborder).

But sea lions, the ones who can walk in all fours on land (with some difficulty of course) and seals are very related, with dogs, and bears. They all belong to the cannifornia (dog-like carnivore) sub-order.

So when they hunt & kill baby seals, think of it as if they're killing dogs. I love dogs, so I hate all the seal hunters. Just saying.

Fur seals are the smallest seals and are closely related to dogs. They have teeth, whiskers and thick fur, similar to the coat of a dog

They both bark.

And have 4 legs and a furry tail and you have to take them for walks and they like to beg for human food at the table.
Wait... no, I don't think that's right.

Let's stick with the barking part.

I'm pretty sure they're not related at all. Dogs are direct descendants of wolves.

They're both mammals. That's about it.
