My friend told me that in Mexico, during election weekend, it is illegal to sell alcohol. She found this out when the alcohol she was trying to take across the border was confiscated because she happened to be going during election weekend.

It then occurred to me that in the United States, you can get as drunk as you want and go vote, as long as you do it by 7!

What are your thoughts on this? :o)

In Indiana it is also illegal to sell alcohol on election day. I think its a good idea because any corrupt official wanting elected or wanted something passed would just go out and buy all the boozers their alcohol for their vote. Why does it hurt for one day unless of course you're the alcoholic?

This came about in the US at one time when politicians bribed alcoholics on election day, with a fifth, in order to get their vote. Saw tihs often back in the '30s.
It does appear to be an exercise in futility.

That may be a good idea. If only drunks could vote we would probably elect better qualified people.

You see, I think I actually NEED to get pissed drunk to go vote (don't worry, I can walk to my local polls)... every time I've voted it seems I'm just picking the lesser of two evils instead of the actual best candidate. Sad but true.

It's the last holdover from Puritan times. We ought to do away with it. Just look at the sorry slate we have to choose from this time around! Even drunks could do better than that!

I'm originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, and the bars are closed until the polls are closed on election day.

Better yet, we should either have an IQ test as you enter the polling booth, or you have to go through a simple video tutorial of how to complete a ballot.

That way we won't have the idiot minorities in Florida who claimed they couldn't figure out a ballot when they didn't like who won.
