I just got a pop on my computer informing me that it is infected by spyware. Can I still use my computer for a day or so,or should I shut it off immediately until I get the software.

Phony warnings or pop-ups about a virus infection and the attempt to sell you some useless software to "fix" the problem often indicates a Smitfraud infection. DO NOT BUY THE PRODUCT THEY TRY TO SELL YOU!

Sounds like your computer may have a variant of this ubiquitous Smitfraud infection. Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG, Norton, or Spybot S & D cannot remove it compleatly.

Free specialised Smitfraud removal tool is here:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
Just follow the easy instructions and USE IT!

Good luck and remember your computer itself can never tell you it has a spyware or a virus. Nor will your computer try to sell you anything. Don't be swindled!

EDIT: ONCE AGAIN WINDOWS CANNOT DETECT SPYWARE....ALRIGHT GO AHEAD AND WASTE YOUR MONEY.

You should be able to continue using it. When you decide to try to get rid of the spyware try some of these. This is a list I have compiled of what I feel are the best free-anti-spyware/anti-malware websites. When I use them together on my system it does an excellent job in keeping it clean.

trust me its a scam that will infect your computer with more spyware. just get adaware to get rid of spyware. those things pop up all the time. they say your computer is infected or its running slow. these programmers are very good at making a pop up look authentic. if you don't believe everyone that has told you then go to windows website and read up on it.

there's plenty of free software to get rid of spyware - you should download something like Adaware or Spybot immediately and run them to get rid of the spyware. It probably won't damage your computer to have it there, but everything you do may be tracked.

That popup IS the spyware infection and it wants you to buy their product..

Download grisoft AVG7.5 to get rid of it . This link is a free version. you can also buy an upgraded version. This software was recommended by my isp carrier and it really works .

i wouldnt do any online banking. other than that you probably can.
but you really need to clean out your computer. messages like that usually come from the malware itself.
so, download the following asap:
ad-aware se personal (*free* spy ware removal)
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007-Free/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
once you install it, do a full system scan... a couple of times, just to make sure.
also, get norton security scan from google pack
http://pack.google.com/holiday.html?utm_campaign=en&utm_source=en-ha-na-us-synsearch-holiday&utm_medium=ha&utm_term=google%20pack
(uncheck everything else)
oh and stop using internet explorer - start using fireFox (can find it in google pack).
make sure you keep that software updated (otherwise it's completely useless) and run it often.
