Don Delillo's "Underworld" is a neo-classic. It's incredibly interesting and encompassing while retaining an ability to "say things". This book is heralded by Harold Bloom, a Sterling Professor at Yale University, who is regarded by many as the authority on fiction, as a must read. He also explains that Delillo along with Pynchon and Roth are the only authors writing books that contain the potential to become classics, in our modern age.

Here's a link from a library near me that might help you: http://www.worthingtonlibraries.org/holidaybooklist.pdf
If you wanted me to list all the books you could be reading over the holidays, you'd get something a little too extravagant. But to list one of my favorites, I'd recommend anything by Stephen King.
