Richard Hadlee of New Zeland was the first bowler to take 400 wickets in test matches. He took his 400th wicket against India at Christchurch on 2nd February, 1990.

However, the fastest to takie 400 test wickets is M. Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, who took 400 test wickets from 72 test matches, whereas Richard hadlee took 400 wickets from 80 test matches.
