The biggest difference: Arecibo telescope is fixed on the ground. It scans the sky as the Earth rotates. Only a particular part of the sky is observable at any particular time. ATA telescopes can be steered to observe any part of sky above horizon.

"For point source surveys, the ATA-42 is comparable in speed with Arecibo and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), but slower by a factor of 3 than the Very Large Array (VLA). The ATA-350, on the other hand, will be an order of magnitude faster than the Very Large Array for point-source surveys and is comparable to the Expanded VLA (EVLA) in survey speed. For surveys to a specified brightness temperature sensitivity, the ATA-98 will exceed the survey speed of even the VLA-D configuration. The ATA-206 should match the brightness temperature sensitivity of Arecibo and the GBT. The ATA, however, provides better resolution than either these single dish telescopes."

sounds like when ATA-350 goes on line if it ever does, it will be a valuable research tool.

Arecibo is one big dish while the Allen array is several dishes working together.

Well the ATA is way more sophisticated and has all the new bells and whistles on it and is designed to listen, I think that it is much better,, it has a good many dishes pointed up and with all the new sensing devices it will be far better, or more up to date is you will
