It is about both. Those with endurance stand a much better chance at advancing to the highest levels of corporate management, but in many cases it also requires a 'pedigree' to get there. Sad to say, some of the most highly qualified do not advance properly, while others do. It's not correct, but it IS reality.
In my days in the corporate world, I saw both. Sometimes, the brightest and best who worked their butts off were passed over by those less qualified because of 'connections'.

It's about being the Boss' Son or Nephew. It's about backstabbing, brown nosing, plotting, scheming, gossiping, fighting and clawing your way to the top. It's about being a yes man and a suck up and telling the boss what he wants to hear, rather than the truth.
It's taking dictation while sitting on the Boss's lap, having dinner and a few drinks, long weekend get-a-ways and late night office work sessions.
Basically, those who work smart not hard, get ahead. Kiss As* and placate the boss and you'll do just fine.
