Cologne is a beautiful town. I've deen there dozens of times (live in the netherlands, but Cologne and Dusseldorf are both nearby for me). The Dom is old, and the centre is lively. The railwaystation is large and very central.

Dusseldorf is very good for shopping though.

The distance between these two cities is quite small. Only 25 minutes by train! So you could actually visit both.

Ooh, i visited both in October :] They're both beautiful cities. If you go to Cologne, have a look around the cathedral! You can't really miss it. If you go to Dusseldorf, i can really recommend a boat trip along the river. Great shopping there too. Personally i enjoyed Dusseldorf more. I only spent a day in each city as i was based in Duisburg, another town in the area. The cities aren't far away from each other, so wherever you decide to go you'll have the option to spend time in both. Enjoy your trip!

Never been to Dusseldorf, but Cologne is a great city. I went during the Christmas markets last year and it was truly magical. We hiked up to the top of the cathedral and then back down, then drank alot of gluhwein.

Considering the deep rivalities between the 2 cities I'm confident you just managed to start a flamewar. ;-)

Personally I vote for Cologne. The cathedral is a must see.

Dus. is considered the "fashion capital" of Germany, though I myself saw more stylin' in Berlin. Koln is a bigger city, but both Koln and Dus. are nice, and like they say they're close together, and there's lots to see within easy walking distance from the train stations,so go to both, for sure, but check out a guidebook like Lonely Planet or Let's Go to see maps of these cities and listings for hotels, bars, restaurants, and other.
