They are called neap tides if they happen semimonthly as the result of the Moon being in the first or last quarter.

Small tidal difference occur in open ocean, often only a few feet.

Generally, a shore which is very steep will show a higher tidal difference than one which has an extremely shallow slope.

The difference in height between high tide and low tide is comparatively less during neap tide. When the moon is at the first quarter or last quarter, sun and moon are separated by 90 degrees when viewed from earth and tidal forces due to the sun partially cancel those of the moon. So, there is a small rise and fall only with the result the range is minmum.
On the other hand, during the spring tide, the sun, earth and the moon are in a line(full moon and new moon) and the tidal forces due to the sun reinforce those of the moon and the range is maximum.

Neap Tides - are especially weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one another (with respect to the Earth). Neap tides occur during quarter moons.
