wow so i'm sure you just loved tctopcats answer! it does not feel like someone is slicing you open with a hot knife. please, get real people. it may hurt but how the hell can they say that? what an idiot. anyways you're usually dialating after the baby drops and you are getting frequent but small braxton hicks contractions that are coming on worse than before.

The pain you experience when you are in labour (not necessarily dilating) is so intense that that is all you can focus on. I would describe it as a very hot burning feeling that lasts for a good minute. To "some" people it does not feel that way - but i am talking from experience, its a very intense strong pulling feeling. You don't necessarily go into labour once you "drop" either i dropped on my last pregnancy 2 weeks before actually having the baby, I endured minor braxton hicks pains the entire time until he eventually came 9 days late! But everyone is different and you really cannot tell if these pains are doing anything unless examined!

you can't physically tell unless the doctor or midwife manually checks with an internal exam.
