It's funny I came across your question. I recently read an article that said that letting babies sit in their car seats for long periods of time because they might not, given the postion of their heads, be able to get enough oxygen. The artical said that putting them in their bassonet is the safest way. I wouldn't take the chance if I were you, even if it will get you some sleep. Sorry, I don't remember where I read that.

As an idea to get the baby to sleep better, you might want to try putting on some light music. This might keep your baby from waking up at every little noise. hope you start getting some better sleep! all the best to you and your family.

Yes! Some doctors actually 'prescribe' babies to sleep in their car seats to help acid reflux and chronic spitting up. The elevated position is what helps them. Its also what makes babies fall asleep so easily in them. There's no harm in a baby sleeping in the car seat. What's much more important is that baby not spend too much time in her seat when she's awake. It can cause developmental delays b/c the position doesn't allow them to work different muscle groups. Use the car seat in the car - not the grocery store and church and etc. every where you see them these days. Invest in a good sling or wrap or pouch. It keeps your hands free (you can even nurse in one!) and babies love slings and such.

ETA: As for getting flat head, that will not happen just from her sleeping in her car seat. Her head will be laying against something whenever she's sleeping, duh! You can prevent baby getting a flat side to the head by not putting her in bouncy seats, car seats, bassinettes, etc, all the varieties of seats all the time when she's awake. Babies are meant to be held. As for SIDS, it does not make the risk of SIDS higher, in fact, it is better b/c it prevents the baby from suffocating on anything or from partially rolling over onto her belly. Make sure she's buckled any time she's in the seat, whether you're in the car or not.

See links below for the actual risk factors of SIDS.

For a newborn, it is probably best to start working on those good sleeping habits! That precious baby is used to sleeping in the tight space of the womb, so the carseat is comforting to her. Try swaddling her tightly with a receiving blanket and see if that helps to soothe her.

BUT, I am guilty of having let my son sleep in his swing (reclined) at 4-5mths of age. It didn't hurt him any, and once he was adjusted to a better sleeping/ eating schedule through the night, I moved him to his crib.

Whatever you decide, just make sure your baby is always safe.

my daughter hated sleeping in her bassinet cause she hated the cold feel of it everytime she moved to a new spot... so i let her sleep where ever was safe and comfortable for her... car seat, bouncer, swing. it wasnt hard to break her of that habit.. as she got to be a few months old i just started moving her to her crib of she fell asleep in any of those... and she would be fine... i think that it reminds them of being in the womb when sleeping so cuddled up in something... now at 15 months she sleeps like an octopus.. arms and legs everywhere! get some sleep... and congrats!

Its not going to hurt her, but it will be a hard habit to break. The only way I could get my son to sleep is when I was holding him...now he's 3 and I'm still having trouble getting him to sleep alone. I think it helps to wait until they're in a really deep sleep and then try to move them to the place you want them to sleep like your bassinet...supposedly if they wake up in the same place over and over, they will get used to sleeping there. (But this has to be done when they're really little...I waited too long!)

I say do what you need to to get your sleep. The first person was totally off. Putting pillows on the floor could easily suffocate the baby, and unless you feel compfortable you should not sleep with the baby. Also sleeping with the baby may mean that she will never get used to sleeping by herself. I would buy one of those baby seats babies usually like them and they are very compfortable.

I see nothing wrong with it. Those infant car seats can be comfortable and you can rock her to sleep in it. Newborns don't need a lot of room, they actually prefer sleeping in small areas. My kids used to fall asleep in the bouncer.

Why not put pillows on the floor or push your bed against the wall and sleep with the baby. You dont want her getting used to the carseat. She loves it cause of the car motion.

My cousin got yelled at by her doctor because of how dangerous it is to let a newborn sleep in a carseat.

It is one of the millions of things that cause sids.

Might just have to watch that she can breathe comfortably, otherwise why not. You need your sleep.
