I have the following setup:
P4 2.4B GHz (Northwood-B, 533MHz, 512KB L2 cache)
MSI MS-7031 (ATi Radeon 9100 IGP + ATi SB300)
DDR400 256MB*2
ATi Radeon 9550 128MB DDR by Asus
Hitachi 250GB SATA2 HDD 8MB cache 7200rpm
LG Super-Multi DVD Drive PATA
Win XP Pro SP2

thing is, XP can be installed properly, but it will either hang at the login screen, or 5 sec after i ve logged in. i ve tried using different sets of RAM (tried 3 pairs) but it remains the same. plugged the hdd to another computer and it ran fine... now i am really unsure wat is the problem here. hope someone can enlighten me

thx in advance

bios settings are already at default, and i can load XP without any problem, ie i can see the blue bar sweep across, and the login page can be loaded

when i click on the icon to load the account, it can show the words "Loading your personal settings...", and it may hang here

if it doesn't, then it can load the desktop, but it will hang 5 sec after loading all the background processes (ie messenger, skype...)

You cannot load XP at all? Those specs are more then fine to be able to load that OS.

It sounds like a hardware problem. Reset your CMOS jumper. If you don't know how to do that, turn off and unplug the computer, and open the case and look for a nickel sized battery on the motherboard and take it out (usually requiring a fingernail or screwdriver, just be sure to touch the inside of the case while doing it). Leave the battery out for 3-5 mintues while the comuter is unplugged. Then put the battery back in, plug the computer in and reboot

More details are needed, but start with loading the latest BIOS, latest drivers.

Is this a newly built machine, or has it only just started to fail os load? What did you change when the board started to fail? Hard Drive?

when did it start? did you do anything for it to become this way? did you upgrade something?

I dunno if anyone else will know what the problem is either if there isn't enough information to start with. Does it work in safemode? if it doesnt work in safe mode, a system hang could be related to a bad hard drive, bad ram, or even bad motherboard.

How about the graphic card. Your motherboard ATi chipset should have an onboard graphics, I think.

If so, try removing your graphic card and use onboard graphic and see how it goes.
